Vallejo Black Primer Review

Thoughts:

Just got Black Primer from AV Vallejo. Bought it on e-Bay for 9£. It is slightly more expensive than sprayed ones but I have to say its a lot better and I think it will last much much longer! My first intension, obviously, was to use it with my airbrush. And so I did for a few miniatures. But I have broken nozzle and tried to apply it straight with a brush. I have to say that it works just as good. Of corse, it is easier to spray it, but when you have no choice it works fine.

Conclusion:
Vallejo Primer > Spray Can Primer
Vallejo Primer > Black paint as primer

When using Vallejo primer with airbrush it is really the thinnest and the most even basing you can get. However, the most important thing is that you can't wreck your miniature with it! It is water based and there is no way you will add to much of it to loose miniature details.

When applying it with brush.. It is better than any paint because its more durable, thought layer is not so even compared to spraying it.

Though, the best sprayed primer still comes from Vallejo.

Advantages:
Even Layers;
Doesn't Melt your brain;
Easy to avoid overspraying;

Disadvantages:
Even once dry its still gummy. Good in keep paints on but once it starts peeling off, it just keeps on going. While can paints crack, they come off only in small areas. Its like having PVA on skin. When it dries, you can peel off large area in one go. Vallejo is something of that nature.

Still the only primer I am using right now. Please, post comments if you got your ideas on primers, paints, other products. Cheers

  1. Hey Midas,

    The word on the street atm is Gesso is a great primer to use. It takes 24hrs to dry, will chip if you don't handle it correctly before varnishing but gives a great coverage and has a nice tooth for your paint to adhere to. I might try it myself but since I never finish my models before playing with them spray is probably safer.

  2. Thats the thing... I do not think spraying is the safest option:) Me myself have ruined quite a few miniatures trying to spray them. Of course, if carefully done it is a possible and fast way.

    Thanks for the comment I will check Gesso out.
